Engagement Gifts - 5 Great Ideas
When two people promise to marry each other...they are known to be engaged or betrothed. The period of time before the wedding can be long or short, depending on the couple. The beginning of an "engagement" period is thought to have begun in 1215, when Pope Innocent III decreed that "marriages are to be ...announced publicly in the churches by the priests during a suitable and fixed time, so that if legitimate impediments exist, they may be known."
Traditionally, engagements were announced by the bride's parents at a gathering. Since the guests did not know the reason for the party, engagement gifts were typically not given.
Today, most couples share their happy news with friends and families in a less formal way. It is, however, still a very exciting time for the bride and groom and their families. Engagement parties may be held for the new couple, providing the opportunity to meet each other's extended family and friends before the wedding. In essence, the engagement party is a celebration for all who are happy for the couple and their pending marriage. The party can be a very informal gathering or a formal affair. If a party if given, you will probably want to bring or send a gift.
In some families and social circles engagement gifts are routinely given, regardless of whether there is a party. In others, they are not. Parents and close relatives may give a gift to commemorate the happy occasion and welcome the new member of the family. There really is no "correct" rule.
